What Are the Standards for Installing Tactile Paving?

Standards for tactile paving pavement

The location and direction of blind paths set on sidewalks should facilitate safe walking and smooth access to barrier-free facilities for visually impaired individuals. The blind path that indicates the direction of travel for visually impaired individuals should be a strip-shaped path. Circular-shaped prompt paths should be set at the starting point, end point, and turning points of the blind path. When building structures are encountered during the paving process, guiding bricks should be set in the blind path. In addition, stopping bricks should be laid at intersections, and the width of the blind path should not be less than 0.6 meters. The width of the traveling blind path should be between 0.3-0.6 meters, and the low or high limit should be chosen according to the width of the road.

During the paving process, a touch brick should be laid 0.3 meters away from the rocks, or a stopping brick should be laid every other pedestrian brick with guiding bricks and stopping bricks laid perpendicular to each other, with a width not less than 0.6 meters. Blind paths should be laid avoiding manhole covers, and the color of the blind path should be medium yellow. When laying bus station signs, guiding bricks should be laid 0.3 meters away from the rocks or in the pedestrian brick every other place, and stopping bricks should be laid for temporary bus stops, with guiding bricks and stopping bricks laid perpendicular to each other, with a width not be less than 0.6 meters. The tactile paving on the inside of the sidewalk should be more than 0.1 meters above the sidewalk and guiding bricks should be laid at the break of the green belt to connect them.

Prompt blind paths should be set at a distance of 250-600mm from pedestrian crosswalk entrances, square entrances, and other areas, with a length corresponding to the width of each entrance. When the pedestrian path has a curved line, the traveling blind path should be aligned with the direction of the pedestrian path. The blind path entering the pedestrian crossing line should be about 300mm away from the curbstone, and a row of prompt blind paths should be laid horizontally to indicate entry into the pedestrian crossing range.

The thickness of the surface tactile part of the tactile ground surface indicator below should be consistent with the pedestrian brick. The blind path should be continuous, with no obstacles such as electric poles, wires, trees, etc. in the middle. If there is a wall, flower bed, or green belt on the outer side of the sidewalk, the traveling blind path should be set 0.25-0.5 meters away from the wall, flower bed, or green belt. If there is a tree pit on the inner side of the sidewalk, the traveling blind path can be set 0.25-0.5 meters away from the tree pit. If there is no tree pit on the pedestrian path, the travelling blind path should not be less than 0.5 meters away from the curbstones.

Tactile pavings are divided into traveling tactile pavings and prompt tactile pavings according to their functions

Traveling tactile pavings

The surface is strip-shaped, and through the tactile feedback and foot feeling of the blind cane, it guides visually impaired individuals to continue walking directly in front of them.

Prompt tactile pavings

The surface is circular, are used at the starting point, turning points, end points of the blind path, locations indicating service facilities, and to prompt visually impaired individuals of unsafe or dangerous situations ahead, with the function to remind them to pay attention.
